Subscan Technology Company History

14 July 2011

Subscan Technology Limited was founded by John Robinson in September 1991, so it celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
John brought his specialist experience in utility mapping to the new venture, which soon began to expand as the company undertook surveys for the retail petroleum industry. By the end of the decade, Subscan employed ten people (including Will Reeves, now Survey Director) and had established strong credentials for the accuracy of its underground mapping.
The company expanded rapidly from 2000. This was mainly due to increased demand as clients began to understand the benefits of real underground mapping as opposed to relying on utility company maps alone. The industry also benefited from new technology (such as Ground Penetrating Radar) that enabled Subscan to locate plastic water and gas pipes.
Subscan built its reputation on employing highly professional and experienced staff. The acquisition in 2002 of Searchwell Limited, a two-person specialist GPR survey company, enhanced Subscan’s skill base. One of these employees was Mike White, who is now the company’s Radar Manager. The Searchwell team brought the latest equipment and expertise and ensured training was passed through the Subscan survey teams and allowed the company to generate substantial GPR knowhow very quickly.
In 2003, Subscan opened two regional offices in Yeovil and Doncaster. Recruiting experienced local survey teams in these areas reduced travelling times, cut costs and gave the company national coverage.
From 2003 onwards, the company has targeted larger contracts and framework agreements. This has culminated in large projects such as work from the Ministry of Defence and the Post Office, each of which is worth around £250,000 a year.
The strengths of Subscan are its knowledge of the industry, experience and access to the latest technology.
